What is Workplace-Life?
Workplace life and quality of life mean a lot of different things to different people
We have categorized topics related to work-place life into three (very overlapping) realms:
Work-life Balance;
Job Satisfaction; and
Workplace Environment.
Work-life Balance
Work-life balance encompasses topics that relate to the intersection of your work-place life and your life outside of work. Naturally, the more hours you put in at work, the less time you have to do things outside of work, but work-life balance topics and issues extend well beyond just the hours you work. Your job's flexibility in the times you need to be at work and your ability to work outside of standard hours have great impact on work-life balance, as do vacation and sick-leave. Conversely, flexibility can result in eroding boundaries between working hours and personal time. Workplace culture and availability of technical support can also impact the balance between work and personal time.
Job Satisfaction
Job satisfaction has significant impact on the quality of life at the workplace. Many factors can impact job satisfaction. Factors will have greater impact for different people. The Lab and Physical Sciences Area want satisfied employees and have tasked Workplace Life Committee with helping address factors associated with job satisfaction; particularly, those factors that more more subtle and that uniquely or disproportionately affect the Physical Sciences Area.
Workplace Environment
The workplace environment consists of both the physical infrastructure: your office and lab space and the Lab's sites; and the sociocultural aspects of the Lab's environment. Aspects of the workplace environment that specifically affect the Physical Sciences Area are within the charge of the PSWLC to highlight to the Associate Laboratory Director and to help identify solutions.
